Lock in the UK provides the fastest growing product sales in 25 years

UK food sales rose 14.3% over the 12 weeks to May 17, the fastest since the start of comparable records in 1994, when the British adapted to the national block, Cantar market research data showed Wednesday.

The period included both March purchases in stores and an eight-week consultation from the government.

The UK has been in a closed position since March 23, although restrictions are gradually being lifted.

Tesco’s industry leader (TSCO.L) of Britain’s four largest grocers was the best in sales with 12.7% sales growth, followed by Sainsbury’s second player (SBRY.L) with 12.5% growth. Sales No. 4 Morrisons (MRW.L) were up 9.8%, while Walmart-owned (WMT.N) Asda lagged 6.5%.

The star performer was the Co-op, player number 6, with an increase in sales of 30.8%.

Kantar said that in the last four weeks until May 17, food sales growth accelerated to 17.2% year on year, as the government announced the first phase of easing blocking restrictions.
